Library Assistant

$15.00 an hour / 15-20 hours a week / evening and weekend shifts

Position Summary

The Library Assistant supports daily library operations, ensuring excellent customer service and efficient access to resources. This position assists patrons with library services, technology, and programs, and contributes to a welcoming, organized environment. Reports to the Library Director.

Key Responsibilities

Circulation & Patron Services

  • Provide customer service at the circulation desk, including checking materials in and out using an integrated library system (ILS).
  • Assist patrons with account management, including registration, holds, renewals, and resolving account issues.
  • Assist patrons with locating materials and using the online catalog.
  • Respond to patron inquiries in person, by phone, or electronically.
  • Guide patrons in the use of library resources, including computers, printers, digital collections, and public Wi-Fi.

Collections & Records

  • Shelve returned materials and maintain order through regular shelf reading.
  • Process interlibrary loan requests and returns.
  • Maintain accurate records of circulation and usage statistics.
  • Assist with collection maintenance, including weeding and shifting materials.

Technology & Digital Literacy Support

  • Help patrons with their general technology needs and education.
  • Maintain knowledge of current technology trends relevant to library services.

Facility Support

  • Open and close the library independently as scheduled.
  • Maintain a clean, welcoming, and organized library space.

Program & Outreach Support

  • Support the preparation and execution of library programs and events under the direction of the Program Director.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Customer service experience, ideally in a library or educational setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, internet applications, and office equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends as scheduled.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or library coursework.
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS) and online catalog platforms.
  • Experience supporting library programs or educational workshops.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
